After waiting 35 years for a Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner fans are used to waiting long periods of time for a follow-up. However, that’s not the case this time as a Blade Runner 2049 sequel series is in development at Amazon, a company that is further doubling down on sci-fi and fantasy.
According to a report from Variety, the live-action series, titled Blade Runner 2099, will serve as a follow-up to Blade Runner 2049, and will see Silka Luisa write and executive produce the project. Ridley Scott will also be attached as executive producer, although it’s unclear as of now who will be directing the series.
Currently, plot details on Blade Runner 2099 are being kept under wraps, but it seems as if the sequel will take place at least 50 years after the sequel, which itself took place 30 years after the original Blade Runner.
Blade Runner 2049 was released in theaters in 2017, and was directed by Denis Villeneuve, with stars Harrison Ford and Edward James Olmos reprising their roles from the original. 2049 also starred Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, and Dave Bautista.
While the film was praised by fans and critics, the box office returns for the film weren’t that great, leading many to wonder if more projects set in the universe would occur. Outside of live-action content, Adult Swim and Crunchyroll have recently partnered together to release the anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus, which takes place in the year 2032 and also acts a follow-up to the original film.
